Diabetic neuropathy is a condition where the nerves in the body are damaged due to high sugar levels in the blood caused by diabetes. This condition can occur in diabetics over the course of time. Common symptoms include, experience tingling pain, numbness, and loss of feeling especially in the hands, arm regions, feet, and legs.

Nerve complications can occur in almost all organs including the heart, digestive system, and even the sex organs. Neuropathies of different kinds occur in about 60% to 70% of all diabetics, especially patients who have had the condition for over 25 years.
 
Causes and Risk Factors
 
The causes may vary depending on the type of neuropathy. Factors responsible for are:
1. Metabolic factors such as:
a) High blood glucose level
b) Prolonged periods of suffering from diabetes
c) Abnormal levels of fats
d) Low insulin levels
2. Neurovascular factors that may cause damage to the blood vessels that transport oxygen and other nutrients to nerves.
3. Autoimmune factors that may bring about inflammation to the nerves
4. Mechanical injury to the nerves
 
Signs and Symptoms
 
Symptoms can develop gradually over several years and may vary depending on the nerve that has been affected. Some common symptoms include:
1. Troubled digestion
2. Feeling of being satiated
3. Occasional heartburns
4. Nausea
5. Diarrhea
6. Constipation
7. Troubled swallowing
8. Nerve damage may bring about loss of sensation in the arms and legs.
9. Unable to notice when something hot comes into contact with the skin
10. Faster heart rate
 
Treatment and Prevention
 
1. Treatment of nausea and vomiting include sleeping in an inclined position (head raised).
2. Diabetic nerve disease can be prevented by:
a) Eat smaller portions of food frequently
b) Eat a healthy diet
c) Exercise regularly
d) Do not skip medications
