Definition
 
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder. A person with OCD gets frequent, upsetting thoughts called obsessions. To control the thoughts, the person feels an overwhelming urge to repeat certain rituals or behaviors. These are called compulsions.
 
Signs and Symptoms 
 
The symptoms often begin in children or teens. 
1. Examples of obsessions are a fear of germs or a fear of being hurt.
2. Compulsions may include:
a) Washing your hands
b) Counting
c) Checking on things
d) Cleaning
With OCD, the thoughts and rituals cause distress and get in the way of your daily life.
 
Causes and Risk Factors
 
Causes of OCD are: 
1. Family history
2. Stressful life events
3. Environment
 
Treatment
 
Treatments include:
1. Therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy
2. Medicines
