What is Albumin, Serum?
Albumin, Serum is a blood test that measures the levels of albumin in the blood. Your liver produces albumin from the proteins you consume. Albumin is the main protein in human blood. It helps maintain fluid balance by preventing the fluid from leaking out of the blood vessels.
The normal range of albumin is 3.5 - 5.5 g/dL. Abnormal albumin levels in the blood indicate improper functioning of the liver or kidney. Causes of low albumin levels include liver disorders, kidney disorders, thyroid disorders, celiac disease, malnutrition, and inflammatory bowel disease. Albumin levels drop in the blood due to severe burns and open wound injuries. High levels of albumin may be due to dehydration and a protein-rich diet.
What is Albumin, Serum used for?
It is usually ordered:
- As a part of routine health screening
- If you have symptoms of liver disease like yellowing of eyes, fatigues, weight loss, loss of appetite
- If you have symptoms of nephrotic syndrome like swelling or puffiness around the eyes, decrease in the amount of urine etc.
- To monitor a person's nutritional status
Interpreting Albumin, Serum results
Interpretations
- Low levels of albumin usually suggest a disease of liver or kidney. It may also be seen in malnutrition.
- High albumin levels may be seen in dehydration.
