Understanding Galactomannan (Aspergillus Antigen) Serum
What is Galactomannan (Aspergillus Antigen) Serum?
This test is used for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis caused by fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. This test is based on the detection of galactomannan, a protein secreted by all pathogenic Aspergillus species. Lungs are the primary affected organs by the infection and its symptoms include fever, chest pain, coughing up blood and shortness of breath.
Most common targets of this infection are immunocompromised patients, people undergoing a cancer treatment and prolonged neutropenia patients.
This test is also recommended to check the efficacy of an ongoing antimicrobial therapy.
A positive result should be followed up with other diagnostic procedures for confirmation of the infection.
