Amaltas

Amaltas
Amaltas also known as Rajvraksha in Ayurveda has bright yellow flowers. It is called as one of the most beautiful trees of India. The pulp, root bark and leaves are used for its pharmacological properties. Amaltas has various therapeutic properties such as antifungal, antioxidant and antidiabetic. These properties help to manage constipation, common cold, fever, intestinal and skin disorders[1-3].

What are the synonyms of Amaltas?

Cassia fistula, Cassia, Indian Laburnum, Sondal, Bahva, Garmalo, Aragvadha, Chaturangula, Rajvraksha

What is the source of Amaltas?

Plant Based

Benefits of Amaltas

1. Constipation
Constipation is caused due to an aggravated Vata and Pitta dosha. This can be due to the frequent consumption of junk food, excess intake of coffee or tea, sleeping late at night, stress and depression. All these factors aggravate Vata and Pitta leading to constipation. Amaltas, if taken regularly helps to manage constipation because of its Sramsana (simple purgative) nature. It helps to expel waste products from the large intestine easily.
Tips:
a. Take 1-2 teaspoon Amaltas fruit pulp paste.
b. Add it to 1 glass of warm water and have it after dinner to get relief from constipation.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is known as Aamavata in Ayurveda. Amavata is a disease in which vitiation of Vata dosha and accumulation of Ama takes place in the joint(s). Amavāta starts with a weak digestive fire which leads to accumulation of Ama (toxic remains in the body due to improper digestion). This Ama is carried to different locations through Vata but instead of being absorbed, it gets accumulated in the joints and gives rise to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Regular intake of Amaltas helps to reduce Ama due to its Deepan and Pachan properties and controls the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Tips:
A. Amaltas Kadha
i. Take 1-2 teaspoon of paste of Amaltas fruit pulp.
ii. Boil it in 2 cups of water till the amount reduces to ½ cup. This is Amaltas Kadha.
iii. Take 4-5 teaspoons of this kadha and add the same quantity of water.
iv. Take it after lunch and dinner to manage the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis (Aamavata).

3. Hyperacidity
Hyperacidity means an increased level of acid in the stomach. An aggravated Pitta impairs the digestive fire, leading to improper digestion of food and production of Ama. This Ama gets accumulated in the digestive channels and causes hyperacidity. Amaltas helps to reduce hyperacidity. It helps to remove the accumulated Ama from the digestive channel and helps manage hyperacidity.
Tips:
a. Take 1 teaspoon Amaltas fruit pulp.
b. Add 1/2 teaspoon Mishri.
c. Take it before lunch and dinner with water to manage hyperacidity.

4. Piles
Piles are known as Arsh in Ayurveda which is caused by an unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle. This leads to the impairment of all the three doshas, mainly Vata. An aggravated Vata causes a low digestive fire, leading to constipation. This causes swelling in the veins in the rectum area leading to pile mass. Amaltas helps to manage constipation due to its Sramsana (simple purgative) property. This also reduces the size of pile mass.
Tips:
a. Take 1-2 teaspoon of Amaltas fruit pulp.
b. Add it to warm water and have it after dinner at night.
