Expert advice for Acetazolamide

  • Acetazolamide helps lower high pressure in the eye and reduce the risk of vision loss.
  • For best results, put one drop 2-3 times daily in the affected eye(s).
  • Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the drop. This minimizes the risk of side effects.
  • Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, or to your eye, to avoid contaminating the eye drops.
  • Remove contact lenses before using Acetazolamide, and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them.
  • When applying multiple eye medications, wait for at least 5-15 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution of the medicine.

Frequently asked questions for Acetazolamide

Acetazolamide

Q. What does Acetazolamide do?

Acetazolamide reduces the pressure inside the eyes, known as intraocular pressure. This helps to reduce the risk of damage to the optic nerve responsible for normal vision. If the pressure in the eye is not controlled, it can gradually lead to blindness. Acetazolamide effectively controls ocular hypertension and certain types of glaucoma by decreasing the pressure in the eyes.

Q. Who should not take Acetazolamide?

You should not take Acetazolamide if you have or ever had cirrhosis, severe liver or kidney disease, an electrolyte imbalance, adrenal gland failure, or an allergy to Acetazolamide or sulfa drugs. Also, let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or are breastfeeding to avoid any harmful effect on your baby.

Q. Is Acetazolamide effective?

Acetazolamide is effective if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Do not stop taking it even if you see improvement in your condition. If you stop using Acetazolamide too early, the symptoms may return or worsen.

Q. I feel better now, can I stop using Acetazolamide?

No, you should not stop using Acetazolamide suddenly without talking to your doctor. This is because if you stop the medication before completing the treatment, your symptoms may return or even worsen. Use Acetazolamide in the dose and duration advised by your doctor to get maximum benefit of Acetazolamide.

Q. What if I forget to take a dose of Acetazolamide?

If you forget a dose of Acetazolamide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take it in the regular schedule instead of taking the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one as this may increase the chances of developing side effects.
