ACTH Stimulation Test

ACTH (AdrenoCorticoTropic Hormone) Stimulation Test is a blood test that measures the ability of your adrenal cortex to react to ACTH by producing adequate cortisol. ACTH is a hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands and is produced in the pituitary gland. This test helps in determining the functioning of the adrenal glands and the pituitary gland.

In this test, the initial blood samples are taken. Then an ACTH injection is pushed. After 30-60 minutes of stimulation with ACTH, a repeat blood test is done. This helps detect the levels of ACTH after stimulation. Normal values of ACTH after the stimulation should be greater than 20 mcg/dl. Abnormal test results indicate Addison’s disease, low pituitary function, pituitary tumours, or acute adrenal crisis.
