What is G6PD Qualitative Reflex?
G6PD Qualitative Reflex also called as Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase test is performed to determine the presence of an inherited deficiency of the enzyme Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase.G6PD enzyme helps the red blood cells to function properly and its absence may cause the breakdown of RBCs which leads to anemia.
G6PD Qualitative Reflex test is prescribed in case of recurring symptoms of hemolytic anemia, in newborns as a screening test within the first few days after birth and in case of persistent jaundice in newborns. Symptoms during a hemolytic episode may include dark urine, fatigue, paleness, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, and yellowing of the skin (jaundice).
Treatment may involve medicines to treat infection, stopping drugs that are causing red blood cell destruction, and transfusions in some cases.
What is G6PD Qualitative Reflex used for?
- When recurring symptoms of haemolytic anemia occur
- When jaundice develops and persists in newborns
- If all other causes of anemia or jaundice have been checked out to be negative
- In newborns as a screening test within the first few days after birth
